Brother Townsend is the long running project and namesake of the band's songwriter and lead singer, Brett Townsend. After years developing his style and sound as a solo act, Brett was accosted by Billy Winters, the band's lead guitarist at the Uptown Pub. Billy was belligerent; he insisted a band be formed immediately. That meeting led to Brother Townsend 1.0 which consisted of Brett, Billy, Chris Styan, Meredith Hoberla, and Sam Stockard. That was spring of 2014 and the start of one heck of a journey.
In the time between then and now, the band performed heaps of shows in bars and backyards, throughout the PNW. They drank both Oregon and Washington dry, then eventually dissolved in a heap for a while. (Rest in Peace dear Chris.)
Eventually the fog cleared, hurt feelings mended, and that incessant creative impulse came calling. Billy and Brett began playing together again as a duet in 2019, booking shows up and down the left coast. Then, of course, the country shut down a while, and all the shows cancelled. As things opened up again, they met Kristina Ziese who came to the band initially as a vocalist, but in time took on the mantle of Bass Queen. Eventually, as fate would have it, they landed with Andrew Rudd behind the kit, and Brother Townsend 2.0 took on its current form.
That journey, from then till now has been highly influential on the sound the band produces. If a genre were ever forced, the easy non-answer could always be Americana. In its initial form, the band tilted more toward the folk/country version of that category. These days, they do still play with the sentimentality and lyrical quality of classic country and folk, but much of their sound is pulling rock, classic rock, and blues tones forward. Their music is at once sincere, thought provoking and melodic. The material seeks to address those big questions that keep us up at night. It toys with themes of loss and regret, the burden of living, and the fear of death. Their shows are fever dreams of dancing, crying, and laughing. Something like a memory and most certainly not to be missed.
